Interim Leadership

Case Study

A private equity-backed 80-bed luxury residential addiction treatment facility located near Vail, Colorado commenced operations in March 2020. Given this timing coincided with start of the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak, the company was struggling with day-to-day operational leadership, rollout of new services, high turnover of staff, low census, and patient and referral reluctance given the Covid virus. David Kobis was asked by the company to provide immediate onsite operational leadership, as well as assist with stabilizing and growing the organization, hiring and retaining staff, recruiting providers, and attaining Joint Commission accreditation. Improvement strategies included the following:

  • Providing onsite operational leadership as Chief Operating Officer.
  • Assessing personnel and making necessary changes as well as revising the organizational structure. Immediate changes were made with clinical, nursing, and physician leadership.
  • Developing basic operating policies and procedures to guide and stabilize the organization.
  • Recruiting multiple providers, including one psychiatrist and two mid-levels.
  • Attaining Joint Commission accreditation within 10 months of start-up.
  • Growing facility census from 25 to 55 in 6 months.
  • Commencing both Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (DTMS) and hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatment (HBOT) services within 4 months of engagement start.
  • Tripling revenue in first year.
